More Than a Redesign: Transforming How The Sewing Labs Teaches, Serves, and Connects

The Sewing Labs is a Kansas City nonprofit that uses sewing to create opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship, and enrichment. As its classes, services, and community grew, the organization needed a website capable of growing with them.

The existing site could share information and process registrations, but it could not bring the full Sewing Labs experience together. Students, customers, donors, volunteers, and staff were left navigating separate tools and processes that were not designed to work as one clear journey.

TANK redesigned The Sewing Labs website and rebuilt it on Shopify to create a more welcoming digital home for its mission. Class registration, student accounts, equipment rentals, quilt-finishing services, shopping, donations, and other important activities now work together in a more connected experience.

What began as a website redesign became a larger transformation in how people discover, join, and stay connected to The Sewing Labs.

The Challenge

A growing mission held back by a disconnected website

People come to The Sewing Labs for very different reasons.

A new sewist may be searching for an approachable first class. A returning student may want advanced instruction, independent study time, or access to specialized equipment. Someone else may need help finishing a quilt. Donors, volunteers, shoppers, and community partners each arrive with their own questions and goals.

The existing website did not make those paths easy to find or follow.

Classes, registrations, student records, services, donations, and communications were spread across separate systems and processes. Visitors could complete individual tasks, but the website did little to help them understand where to begin, what to do next, or how different opportunities connected.

Students registered for classes without a clear view of how they could continue learning. Quilt-finishing customers needed staff assistance to sort through project details. Returning students had limited access to their previous activity.

Updating class information, tracking registrations, managing student records, and collecting service details required time-consuming manual work.

The visual experience presented another challenge. The website did not capture the warmth, creativity, and resourcefulness people experience when they walk through The Sewing Labs’ doors.

The organization did not simply need a more attractive website. It needed a clearer experience for its community and a more manageable system for its staff.

The Strategy

Designing around every way people participate

TANK started by looking beyond the website’s page structure.

We mapped how different people interact with The Sewing Labs, including someone discovering the organization for the first time, a student building new skills over several classes, and a customer requesting a custom quilt-finishing service.

Content_CaseStudy_SWLB-StrategyThat work helped us identify where visitors were getting lost, where information was disconnected, and where staff had to step in to keep a process moving.

We then reorganized the website around what people want to accomplish instead of expecting them to understand how the organization operates behind the scenes.

The redesigned experience makes it easier to:

  • Find and register for the right class
  • Understand class levels and prerequisites
  • See recommended paths for continued learning
  • View upcoming and previous classes
  • Access equipment rentals and independent study options
  • Request custom quilt-finishing services
  • Shop, donate, volunteer, and explore the mission

Each path is clearer on its own, but the larger value comes from how those paths now fit together.

The Website Redesign

Bringing the creativity of The Sewing Labs into every part of the experience

The Sewing Labs is welcoming, inventive, practical, and full of personality. The new website needed to communicate those qualities without becoming cluttered or difficult to navigate.

TANK created a visual direction built around a warm, neutral foundation with expressive illustrations, icons inspired by stitching patterns, and thread lines woven throughout the site. These elements bring energy and movement to the design while connecting it directly to the organization’s work.

The personality is not limited to decorative details. The layout, content, and navigation work together to make the website feel approachable, even when visitors are exploring more complicated class and service options.

The redesigned site also gives The Sewing Labs more room to communicate the larger purpose behind its programs. Sewing is presented as more than a hobby. It can build confidence, develop practical skills, create relationships, and open doors to economic opportunity.

The final design feels inviting without losing clarity and creative without losing purpose. Most importantly, it feels like The Sewing Labs.

The Class Experience

Turning a class schedule into a learning journey

Classes are central to The Sewing Labs, but the previous website treated them largely as separate registration opportunities. Students could find a class, but it was harder to understand which one was right for them or where it might lead next.

The redesigned class experience gives visitors searchable and filterable listings that can be narrowed by interest, experience, and availability.

Clear class levels and prerequisite information help students choose with greater confidence. Recommended learning paths show how individual classes connect, helping someone move from an introductory course to more advanced skills over time.

The result is more than an improved class calendar. It is a clearer path into learning and a stronger invitation to keep going.

The Student Experience

Keeping the relationship going after registration

The previous website treated registration largely as a single transaction. The new experience supports a longer relationship between students and The Sewing Labs.

Self-check-in makes class administration easier, while independent study subscriptions give returning students a simpler way to continue using the space and practicing their skills.

TANK also moved historical student and class information into the redesigned website. Preserving that history gave The Sewing Labs a more complete view of its community and gave students a stronger sense of continuity when using the new site.

Together, these improvements turn the website into something students can return to throughout their learning journey, not just when they need to make another purchase.

The Custom Quote Builder

Taking the guesswork out of quilt-finishing requests

Requesting quilt-finishing services involves several decisions. Customers may need to provide quilt dimensions and make selections related to batting, binding, stitching methods, and patterns.

Previously, much of that information had to be collected through conversations with staff. Customers did not always know what details were needed, which created more back-and-forth before The Sewing Labs could prepare an accurate quote.

TANK created a custom quote builder that guides customers through the process one decision at a time.

This gives customers more confidence in their choices and gives The Sewing Labs clearer, more consistent information from the start.

The Technology

Connecting more of the work behind the mission

The website redesign needed to improve what visitors could see, but it also needed to address what staff managed behind the scenes.

The new Shopify website brings classes, student accounts, products, donations, registrations, purchases, and service requests into a more connected setup.

Visitors do not have to think about the technology supporting the experience. They simply encounter clearer choices, better guidance, and fewer obstacles.

For The Sewing Labs, the new setup provides a more manageable way to support the activity generated through the website. Staff can spend less time piecing together disconnected information and more time serving students, customers, and the wider community.

It also gives the organization room to adjust its classes, programs, and services without outgrowing its website again.

The Transformation

From a website people visited to a website that helps them participate

The Sewing Labs now has more than a redesigned website. It has a digital home built around how its community learns, creates, and gets involved.

A first-time visitor can discover an appropriate class and understand where to begin. A returning student can view their activity and continue developing their skills. A quilt-finishing customer can move through a complicated request with clear guidance. Donors, volunteers, shoppers, and community partners can more easily find their next step.

Behind the website, staff have a clearer way to manage the registrations, records, purchases, and requests that support those experiences.

What once required visitors and staff to piece together information across separate processes now works as a more connected journey, wrapped in a design that reflects the creativity and warmth of the organization.

The new website does not simply tell people what The Sewing Labs does. It helps them become part of it.

“The new site feels so much better. It brings the creativity and personality of The Sewing Labs into the experience, makes it easier to tell the story of what we do, and gives us something we are genuinely excited to share.”

Is Your Website Helping People Participate or Making Them Work for It?

A nonprofit website should do more than explain the mission. It should help people find their place in it.

When programs, services, and systems grow more complicated, TANK helps nonprofit organizations turn them into clear, welcoming website experiences that work better for the people they serve and the teams doing the work.

Let’s design a nonprofit website that moves your mission forward.
